Underarm or rugby hold,

The underarm hold, also known as the clutch hold or rugby hold, is a breastfeeding position that provides excellent support and control. Mothers who have had a C-section, are nursing twins, or have a small or premature baby often like the rugby hold. The position allows a mother to keep her baby well-supported while giving more freedom to her hands to ensure a deep latch.

In a comfortable chair with good back support, the mother holds her baby under her arm on the same side as the breast she is using. Some mothers find it helpful to have a pillow at her side for her baby to lie on. Her baby’s body should be tucked along her side, with his legs pointing behind her. Her baby’s head should rest in her hand, and his body should be supported along her forearm.

With a free hand, as above, some mothers find that shaping the breast can help the baby achieve a deeper latch. Touching the nipple to the baby’s upper lip, encourages him to open his mouth wide. Once his mouth is fully open, the mother brings her baby in closer, ensuring he takes in a deep mouthful of breast tissue rather than just the nipple.
